The hague: The Netherlands has signed a deal to buy a new Patriot air defense system worth $1.1 billion, according to media reports on Tuesday.

According to Anadolu Agency, Dutch Minister for Arms Procurement and Personnel Derk Boswijk signed the purchase contract with the American manufacturer Raytheon on Tuesday afternoon. This agreement adds to the Netherlands' existing defense capabilities under a deal valued at $1.1 billion, as reported by broadcaster RTL.

Last year, the Netherlands purchased another Patriot system, and with the new acquisition, the country's total number of such systems will increase to five. This strategic enhancement highlights the Netherlands' commitment to bolstering its air defense infrastructure.

In 2023, the Netherlands demonstrated its support for Ukraine by sending one of its Patriot systems to Kyiv. This move aimed to help Ukraine defend itself against Russian missile and drone attacks. Additionally, two other Dutch Patriots are currently stationed in Poland as part of NATO's defense strategy.
