OpenAI CEO Cautions Against Attributing Religious Authority to AI

Ankara:OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed concerns about attributing religious authority to artificial intelligence models, emphasizing the potential safety issues involved. Altman stated his discomfort with the idea of surrendering human judgment to AI, viewing it as a significant safety concern.

According to Anadolu Agency, Altman's remarks followed reports of Anthropic, a competitor in the AI industry, engaging in discussions with religious and philosophical experts about AI consciousness and morality. These discussions explored the possibility of AI systems, like Anthropic's Claude, being conscious and how religious thought might influence their behavior.

Anthropic is also examining "model welfare," considering whether advanced AI systems might have experiences that deserve moral consideration. This topic has attracted attention from other technology leaders as well.

Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman has also voiced opposition to developing AI systems that appear conscious. He argues that promoting the belief that AI has subjective experiences could introduce new risks and supports a "Humanist AI" approach, which views AI as tools designed to serve humans, rather than entities with their own interests.
