Mobile Network Outage Disrupts Train Services and Emergency Calls in Norway

Oslo:A major outage in Telenor's mobile network caused significant disruptions across Norway, halting train services and affecting calls to emergency services, as reported by public broadcaster NRK.

According to Anadolu Agency, the disruption began when Telenor's network experienced a fault at 3.15 pm local time, affecting calls to and from its customers, including some emergency numbers. The issue persisted with voice traffic even after SMS and mobile network services were restored by 6 pm.

The rail infrastructure operator, Bane Nor, halted all train services because train controllers were unable to contact emergency services, a measure taken for safety reasons in case of serious incidents. Olav Nordli, a communications adviser, noted the precautionary suspension.

Train operator Vy confirmed that trains were either stopped at or nearing stations, advising passengers of potential delays and cancellations. Vy arranged for buses to transport passengers from Oslo to other major cities. Passengers were given the option to leave the trains or wait for services to resume, as stated by Vy's communications director, Elin Myrmel-Johansen.

Despite improvements in the network, the Norwegian Communications Authority warned that Telenor customers might still face difficulties reaching emergency numbers. Police in Oslo and several districts issued warnings about potential issues reaching the emergency number 112 and non-emergency number 02800. The Norwegian Directorate of Health mentioned that the medical emergency number was also impacted, advising affected callers to try again or use an alternative network.

The Directorate for Civil Protection assured that the separate emergency communications network used by responders remained functional. Telenor communications manager Vetle Andersen informed Aftenposten that there were no indications of a hacking or attack.
