Washington:US President Donald Trump has announced his support for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of Israel's October 27 elections, proclaiming his 'Complete and Total Endorsement' for Netanyahu's re-election campaign.
According to Anadolu Agency, Trump expressed his admiration for Netanyahu in a detailed post on his Truth Social platform, emphasizing the strong partnership between the United States and Israel under Netanyahu's leadership, particularly in dealing with Iran. He cautioned that the US might need to shoulder more of the burden should Israelis elect a different leader.
Trump characterized Netanyahu as 'Strong, Brave, and Brilliant,' highlighting the Israeli leader's ability to withstand internal opposition and other pressures. Following his endorsement, Trump told Israel's Channel 12 that he had planned to support Netanyahu all along but was careful not to do so prematurely.
The President underscored the importance of Israel having a reliable leader, indicating that while he might work with a different Israeli leader, he preferred not to take that risk. Netanyahu's election campaign is currently under intense scrutiny, with criticism focused on his management of security issues, the conflict in Gaza, and Israel's international relations.
The situation in Gaza remains dire, with Palestinian authorities reporting over 74,000 Palestinians killed and more than 175,000 injured, primarily women and children, since October 2023. The region's infrastructure has suffered extensive damage, with about 90% destroyed or impaired.
In November 2024, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Additionally, the International Court of Justice is reviewing a case initiated by South Africa, and supported by several other nations, alleging genocide by Israel against Palestinians in Gaza.
