Iranian President Expresses Concerns Over Defense Minister Nominee Amid US Sanctions

Tehran:Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has expressed concern over the well-being of his defense minister nominee, Mehrdad Akhlaqi Ketabchi, citing US sanctions and an alleged 'assassination list' that includes Akhlaqi.

According to Anadolu Agency, Pezeshkian's remarks were made during a virtual parliamentary session discussing Akhlaqi's nomination. He emphasized that Akhlaqi is currently under US sanctions and claimed that there are threats to his life.

Pezeshkian expressed hope that Akhlaqi would maintain his safety and, with the support of Iranian institutions, continue his work to enhance the country's defense capabilities. He urged lawmakers to support Akhlaqi, highlighting his backing from various branches of Iran's armed forces, including the army and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Akhlaqi, who has held senior positions in Iran's defense ministry, has been involved with the country's ballistic missile program and has faced US sanctions for his activities. He was nominated to succeed former Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh, who died in US-Israeli attacks earlier this year.

President Pezeshkian reiterated that Iran's defense strategy is not aggressive but is prepared to respond to any threats. He emphasized the importance of national unity and resilience against external pressures.
