Paris:French prosecutors have called for a 10-month suspended prison sentence and a two-year prohibition on holding public office for European Parliament member Rima Hassan. This legal action is in response to a deleted social media post in which Hassan cited one of the perpetrators of a deadly 1972 attack at Tel Aviv airport.
According to Anadolu Agency, the prosecution argued that Hassan's post constituted 'glorification of terrorism,' accusing it of trivializing the attack and praising its perpetrator. The prosecutor's office dismissed Hassan's claim that the case was politically motivated, describing the alleged offense as 'flagrant' and unrelated to her political views.
Hassan, affiliated with the left-wing La France Insoumise party, contends that the case is an effort to intimidate her and suppress an opposition lawmaker. The controversial post, published on the US social media platform X on March 26 and later deleted, quoted Kozo Okamoto, a member of the Japanese Red Army involved in the May 30, 1972, attack at Lod Airport near Tel Aviv, which resulted in 26 deaths and numerous injuries.
The trial commenced on Monday in Paris and continued into Tuesday without a ruling yet issued by the court.
