Kyiv:Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed skepticism regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin's expressed readiness for peace talks, suggesting it could be a 'political trick' aimed at avoiding heightened tensions with the United States ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, Zelenskyy stated in an interview with Ukrainian broadcaster TSN that the true intentions of the Kremlin would be revealed through its actions and readiness to reach agreements. He emphasized that the trilateral talks scheduled for November would be crucial in determining whether Putin's stance is genuine or merely a ruse.
Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine's preparedness for these trilateral discussions among technical groups, highlighting the necessity for tangible outcomes. In the event that a comprehensive settlement is not achievable in the upcoming talks, he proposed alternatives such as an energy ceasefire, agreements on maritime security and grain shipments, a comprehensive prisoner exchange, or a meeting involving the leaders of Ukraine, the US, and Russia.
Furthermore, Zelenskyy articulated that any discussions regarding territorial issues should occur at the leaders' level, labeling it a 'red line.' He firmly rejected any limitations on Ukraine's armed forces or demands for the country to adopt a neutral stance. He stressed that while Ukraine is open to discussions, it is not willing to make exchanges without substantial results.
In addition, Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of maintaining sanctions against Moscow until meaningful agreements are reached, cautioning against entering high-level meetings without the leverage of sanctions, monetary resources, or frozen assets.
Zelenskyy also commented on the localized ceasefire in the Russian-controlled Ukrainian city of Oleshky, arranged by US first lady Melania Trump. The truce, proposed to start on October 27, is intended to allow humanitarian missions into the area. However, Zelenskyy warned of potential Russian efforts to direct evacuees towards its territories instead of allowing them to leave freely. He stressed the priority of ending the blockade and ensuring safe living conditions for residents, with the ideal outcome being their evacuation to Ukrainian-controlled territory for support and assistance.
