Israeli Defense Minister Confirms Displacement of 2,000 Palestinians in Hebron

Hebron:Israel's defense minister has admitted to the forced displacement of approximately 2,000 Palestinians from their homes in Hebron, a city in the southern occupied West Bank. This acknowledgment comes amid an ongoing Israeli military operation in the area.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, Defense Minister Israel Katz stated in an interview with public broadcaster KAN that the displaced Palestinians would not be permitted to return until the dismantling of what he referred to as 'Hamas infrastructure' in the city is completed. The military operation, now in its second day, has significantly disrupted local life, affecting education and municipal services.

The Hebron education directorate announced the suspension of school activities for Sunday and Monday. In response, Hebron University and Al-Quds Open University have moved their classes online. Additionally, the municipality reported a buildup of rubbish, as access to disposal sites outside the city has been blocked due to the closure of entrances.

The Israeli forces sealed off Hebron and the nearby town of Halhul following an attack on an Israeli checkpoint by two Palestinians. The attack resulted in the deaths of two Israeli soldiers, with three others injured. The attackers were subsequently killed by Israeli forces. The Israeli army has indicated that the operation, which involves Shin Bet and Border Police forces, is expected to continue for several days.

The events in Hebron are part of a broader escalation of military actions and violence in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, since the beginning of Israel's war on the Gaza Strip in October 2023. These actions have included the killing and detention of Palestinians, home demolitions, and the expansion of illegal settlements.
