China Conducts Successful Stealth Drone Tests from Warship

Beijing:China announced a successful test of its stealth drone, Gongji-21 (GJ-21), executing the first takeoff and landing from a warship equipped with an electromagnetic catapult. This test marks a significant advancement in China’s naval capabilities, involving the Type 076 amphibious assault ship, Sichuan.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, the GJ-21 is China’s first carrier-borne stealth drone with both reconnaissance and strike abilities. The Sichuan, launched in 2024, was on a sea voyage when these historic tests were conducted.

The breakthrough demonstrates China’s growing prowess in maritime combat technology. The Sichuan warship, equipped with a fully automated landing guidance system and advanced power systems, represents a leap in naval innovation. It is the first Chinese warship to feature an electromagnetic catapult, enhancing its ability to deploy various aerial and amphibious equipment.

The GJ-21 drone, a large, tailless subsonic aircraft powered by a turbofan engine, benefits from these innovations. It can be launched via the electromagnetic catapult and recovered using the warship’s arresting wires. Additionally, the drone’s folding wings facilitate easier storage and mobility on the carrier deck.
