AI for Sustainable Development a Key Focus in South Africa’s G20 Presidency: President

Pretoria: South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) for sustainable development is a key focus under South Africa's G20 presidency.

According to Anadolu Agency, the president shared this vision during his address at the Microsoft South Africa Investment Announcement. He expressed enthusiasm for the newly launched National AI Skilling Initiative, which aims to equip public servants with AI knowledge. Additionally, Ramaphosa revealed that South Africa is finalizing a cybersecurity bill to safeguard online government services and protect citizens' digital transactions.

Ramaphosa also mentioned the development of a National AI Policy, which aims to establish South Africa as a leader in AI innovation while considering the broader implications of AI. He commended Microsoft's commitment to training one million South Africans in AI skills, machine learning, and cybersecurity by 2026, viewing it as a positive step for the country.

The president emphasized the importance of skilled talent and highlighted AI's potential to transform industries and create jobs. He expressed a commitment to leveraging new technologies to drive Africa's growth, industrialization, and progress. Ramaphosa concluded by stating that the G20 presidency presents an opportunity to expand the global digital economy and create a balanced AI landscape that benefits all.
