Data Reveals 11% Surge in Tuberculosis Cases in England.

London: The number of reported Tuberculosis (TB) cases in England increased by 11% in 2023 compared to the previous year, the Health Security Agency (UKHSA) announced Thursday. England reported 4,855 TB notifications last year, an increase from 4,380 in 2022, as per the data.

According to Anadolu Agency, the UKHSA stated that England continues to be classified as a low-incidence country for TB, with a rate of 8.5 notifications per 100,000 population. Despite the increase, the number of cases remains below the peak observed in 2011, where the rate was 15.6 notifications per 100,000 population.

The report highlighted that 80% of all TB notifications in 2023 were from individuals born outside the UK, predominantly from countries like India, Pakistan, Nigeria, and Romania. Esther Robinson, head of the TB Unit at UKHSA, emphasized, “TB is curable and preventable, but the disease remains a serious public health issue in England.”

The symptoms of TB include a persistent cough lasting more than three weeks, high t
emperature, night sweats, loss of appetite, and weight loss. The World Health Organization also reported that 10.8 million people worldwide were ill with TB in 2023, marking a 7% increase from 2020.
