Washington: Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty reaffirmed a "complete Arab consensus" rejecting the displacement of Palestinians during a meeting with US Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen. This meeting comes in light of US President Donald Trump's controversial proposal to evacuate Gaza and resettle Palestinians in regional Arab nations such as Egypt and Jordan.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry released a statement on Monday detailing the meeting between Abdelatty and Van Hollen, who is a member of the Senate's Foreign Relations and Appropriations Committees. Held in Washington on Sunday evening, the discussions focused on strengthening the strategic partnership between Egypt and the US, with a particular emphasis on the Palestinian issue.

The meeting included an "in-depth exchange of views on the latest developments regarding the Palestinian cause." Abdelatty underscored the "unified Arab stance against any forced displacement of Palestinians," emphasizing the importance of establishing a political framework that supports an independent Palestinian state and ensures the Palestinian people's right to self-determination.

President Trump's proposal to "take over" Gaza and relocate Palestinians has been widely condemned. On February 4, he suggested transforming the enclave into "the Riviera of the Middle East" under an extraordinary redevelopment plan. This proposal followed a ceasefire agreement on January 19, which halted Israel's military actions in Gaza that resulted in over 48,100 Palestinian casualties and extensive destruction.

The plan has faced strong opposition not only from Palestinian and Arab leaders but also from countries around the world, including Canada, France, Germany, and the UK.
