Brussels: The Socialists and Democrats (S and D) Group in the European Parliament has expressed robust backing for Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez following his criticism of US and Israeli military actions against Iran. Sanchez reportedly obstructed US warplanes from utilizing Spanish bases for launching Middle Eastern operations.
According to Anadolu Agency, the S and D Group took to the US social media platform X to declare their support for Sanchez, commending Spain's choice of "dignity and international law over yet another illegal war." The group emphasized its resolve against threats, stating, "Trump's threats will hit a wall: the EU's trade power." They further asserted their commitment to sovereignty and principles, declaring them non-negotiable.
Additionally, the Party of European Socialists (PES) affirmed its support for Sanchez, underscoring the importance of upholding international law and diplomacy amid the rising tensions in the Middle East. The PES statement on X conveyed "full support" for Sanchez and highlighted Europe's duty to stand firm on principles of international law, multilateralism, and strategic autonomy.
The PES also condemned the Iranian government's repression of its citizens while emphasizing the need for European leaders to adhere to EU foundational principles. They affirmed, "While we remain unequivocal in our condemnation of the Iranian regime's oppression of its people, we must hold fast to the principles upon which the EU was built."
Sanchez denounced the "unilateral military action" by the US and Israel, cautioning that it escalates tensions and fosters an "uncertain and hostile international order." In response, former US President Donald Trump threatened to sever trade with Spain, criticizing it as a "terrible" ally after Spain's refusal to allow US military use of its bases for Iran-related operations.
Spain's Foreign Minister, Jose Manuel Albares, cautioned about the crisis's potential widespread ramifications, including disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and surging global oil prices. He called for de-escalation and renewed diplomatic efforts. Spain also condemned Iran's retaliatory strikes on Gulf countries following the joint US-Israel operation.
The military offensive by Israel and the US, announced on Saturday, was justified by alleged threats from the Iranian regime. Tehran, claiming self-defense rights, launched drone and missile attacks on Israel and US-linked sites in several Gulf states, compelling multiple countries in the region to temporarily close their airspace. Tensions between Israel and Iran have persisted since last year's 12-day conflict, during which the US targeted three Iranian nuclear facilities.
