France’s Macron Stresses Importance of Increasing Investments in Europe’s Defense

Paris: French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday emphasized the importance of increasing investments in Europe's defense. "Defending Europeans' interests certainly goes through an increasing investment in our defense," Macron stated at a joint news conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Paris.

According to Anadolu Agency, Macron highlighted the urgency for Europe, France, and Germany to assume roles that reinforce a united, strong, and sovereign Europe. He pointed out the necessity for Europe to commit to transatlantic ties while also being able to express and defend its interests. This call to action comes after the inauguration of the new US administration on Monday, which has prompted European leaders to reassess their global position and consider appropriate policies concerning defense, security, support for Ukraine, trade, and competitiveness.

The re-election of Donald Trump as president of the US has sparked concerns across Europe, especially amid ongoing economic challenges and debates over sovereignty. Trump has previously urged European nations to increase their defense spending, a call that Macron echoed but with an added emphasis on the development of Europe's own industrial base. Macron stressed the importance of not just increasing defense budgets but also cultivating Europe's own capacities and industry to ensure a robust and independent defense sector.
