Iraq’s Maliki Condemns Attacks on PMF, Urges National Unity

Baghdad: Former Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has condemned the targeting of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), describing it as a 'blatant aggression' and a serious violation of Iraq's sovereignty. Maliki's remarks were made in response to recent airstrikes in Anbar province, which resulted in at least 30 deaths and numerous injuries.

According to Anadolu Agency, Maliki posted a statement on the social media platform X, highlighting the expansion of the US-Israeli conflict with Iran into Iraqi territory. He asserted that the attacks on the PMF represent an assault on Iraqi forces, facilities, and figures. Maliki called for a united front among the government and political factions to address what he termed violations by 'Zionist forces backed by the United States.'

Maliki emphasized the Iraqi people's rejection and condemnation of the attacks on Iraqi nationals and institutions. His statement follows the recent airstrikes in Anbar, reported by Iraqi media, which targeted PMF sites. Shafaq News, referencing a security source, indicated that the strikes hit at least three sites belonging to the PMF's 19th Brigade in the town of Akashat.

The airstrikes occur amid increasing regional tensions following a joint US-Israeli attack on Iran on February 28. The conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with Iranian authorities reporting 1,300 deaths and over 10,000 injuries. In retaliation, Iran has launched drone and missile strikes on Israel, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets.

The PMF, or Hashd al-Shaabi, was established on June 14, 2014, as a volunteer force to aid Iraqi security forces against ISIS. It was officially integrated into Iraq's armed forces by a government decree in July 2016.
