Beirut: Israeli aircraft targeted the Tair Falsay (Az-Zrariyah) bridge over the Litani River in southern Lebanon, causing significant damage to the structure that serves as a crucial connection for several districts in the region, as reported by the Lebanese National News Agency (NNA).
According to Anadolu Agency, the airstrike on the 'Feb. 6 Bridge' marks the first instance of an Israeli attack on a state-owned facility, as previous operations primarily focused on Hezbollah positions and residential areas. The bridge plays a vital role in linking the districts of Tyre, Bint Jbeil, Nabatieh, and Zahrani, underscoring its strategic importance.
Despite three strikes by Israeli forces, a Lebanese Army checkpoint remains stationed on the bridge. Additionally, a United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) position is located approximately 300 meters from the bridge, which serves as the final link between regions south and north of the Litani River. The Israeli military claimed that Hezbollah utilizes the bridge for movement between northern and southern Lebanon.
Israel further alleged that Hezbollah stationed rocket launchers near the bridge, using them to launch attacks on Israeli territory. The recent escalation follows Hezbollah's targeting of Israeli military sites beginning March 2, in retaliation to ongoing Israeli assaults on Lebanon despite a ceasefire initiated in November 2024 and the killing of Iran's former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in Tehran.
The Israeli military intensified its operations on the same day with airstrikes on Beirut's southern suburbs and areas in southern and eastern Lebanon. Subsequently, on March 3, Israel launched a limited ground incursion in southern Lebanon, coinciding with a joint campaign with the United States against Iran initiated on February 28.
