Jordan: Jordanian air defense systems and Royal Jordanian Air Force aircraft successfully intercepted and shot down 20 missiles launched from Iran targeting the Azraq area in Zarqa governorate early Thursday, the army confirmed in a statement. The interception operation resulted in debris falling, though no casualties or material damage were reported.
According to Anadolu Agency, a responsible military source at the General Command of the Jordanian Armed Forces-Arab Army stated that engineering teams were deployed to handle the remnants of the missiles to ensure they contained no explosives. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for the launch, stating that it aimed at a base in Jordan hosting American F-35, F-15, and F-16 fighter jets, in retaliation for US strikes on Iran.
In an earlier statement, the IRGC announced that they had struck 18 major US military targets at Ali Al Salem and Ahmad Al Jaber bases in Kuwait, as well as the Sheikh Isa base in Bahrain. Iranian military statements also mentioned attacks on Patriot systems, communications facilities, and the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain.
These developments occur amid escalating tensions following US strikes on southern Iran and subsequent Iranian attacks targeting US military assets across the region. This situation persists despite a ceasefire in the conflict that began on February 28. US President Donald Trump remarked on Wednesday that Iran has delayed negotiations for too long and will have to "pay the price."
Talks since the April ceasefire have focused on creating a framework to end the conflict, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and further negotiations concerning Iran's nuclear program.
