SEOUL: Protesters clashed with police outside the presidential residence in Seoul on Thursday, demanding the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol following his failed attempt to impose martial law earlier this month. Nearly 1,000 demonstrators gathered at the entrance, chanting slogans such as "Arrest insurrection ringleader Yoon Suk Yeol," and defying police warnings. According to Anadolu Agency, the protesters, composed of members from the militant labor umbrella group, the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, and liberal civic organizations, initiated their demonstration near Seoul Plaza in the afternoon. They briefly engaged in a standoff with police in the Namyeong-dong neighborhood, blocking roads near the presidential residence and causing traffic disruptions. Separate protests have persisted outside the National Assembly for ten consecutive days, with participants demanding Yoon's impeachment. This unrest coincides with an opposition bloc of six political parties filing a second impeachment motio n against Yoon, with a parliamentary vote anticipated on Saturday. The ruling People Power Party (PPP) leader, Han Dong-hoon, expressed support for Yoon's impeachment on Thursday, following the president's public defense of his martial law attempt. Han stated that it has become "clearer" that Yoon is "unable to carry out" his duties, emphasizing the necessity of resolving the situation "swiftly" through the impeachment process. President Yoon, 63, narrowly survived a first impeachment motion over the weekend. For the impeachment to succeed, the opposition bloc requires the backing of at least eight ruling lawmakers in the 300-seat parliament to achieve the 200 votes necessary to remove the president from office. Yoon's imposition of martial law on December 3 led to immediate backlash, with 190 lawmakers convening to pass a motion lifting it. This move has sparked a political crisis and increasing demands for Yoon's resignation, even from within his own party.
