Top US, German Diplomats Discuss Strait of Hormuz and NATO Reforms

Ankara: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul on Monday to coordinate on global security issues and NATO reforms. The discussions were centered around the ongoing security concerns in the Strait of Hormuz and strategies for NATO's future.

According to Anadolu Agency, the two top diplomats reiterated the shared US-Germany commitment to upholding safe transit in the Strait of Hormuz and ensuring that Iran never develops or obtains a nuclear weapon. This meeting comes in the wake of recent diplomatic efforts to finalize a peace deal between the US and Iran, underlining the urgency and importance of these discussions.

The talks also covered preparations for the upcoming NATO Summit, which is scheduled for July 7-8 in Ankara, Turkey. Both officials highlighted the importance of "burden shifting" within NATO, a strategic move aimed at ensuring European partners take on a greater role in their own conventional defense. This approach is seen as crucial for maintaining the organization's effectiveness and readiness in the face of evolving global threats.

In addition to these topics, Rubio and Wadephul reaffirmed their unwavering support for achieving a durable peace between Russia and Ukraine. This reflects ongoing international efforts to stabilize the region and address the conflict's broader implications on global security.
