Ankara: Trkiye has achieved a significant milestone in the global construction industry, ranking second worldwide with 48 contractors listed among the top 250 largest construction firms, as reported by the Turkish Trade Ministry. This achievement places Trkiye just behind China in the number of firms included in the prestigious Engineering News-Record's (ENR) list.
According to Anadolu Agency, Turkish contractors have been actively involved in global projects, undertaking contracts worth $24.9 billion last year. This figure marks an increase from the $20.8 billion recorded in 2024. Turkish firms secured a 4.5% share of the total $550.6 billion in construction revenue generated by the top 250 firms on ENR's list. The overall growth in the sector was noted at 9.7%, reflecting the dynamic nature of the global construction market.
The Turkish Trade Ministry highlighted that Trkiye has advanced two positions from the previous year, now ranking seventh globally in terms of project value. The country is positioned behind China, France, Spain, the US, South Korea, and Italy, while surpassing other nations like Japan, the Netherlands, and India. Notably, seven Turkish construction companies have entered the top 100 in this year's list, with two of them making it into the top 50.
Despite facing challenges such as geopolitical uncertainties, supply chain disruptions, rising costs, a shortage of skilled labor, and adverse weather conditions related to climate change, the global construction market continued to expand. The ministry's statement emphasized that comprehensive business models, including local partnerships, risk management, technical capacity, digitalization, and public-private partnerships (PPPs), have enhanced the competitive edge of companies.
In addition to construction, the list of the top 225 global engineering consulting firms saw an increase in Turkish representation, with nine firms included this year compared to eight last year. Turkish builders have undertaken 12,952 global construction projects valued at over $568 billion across 138 countries. Meanwhile, Turkish engineering consultancy firms have completed approximately 3,177 global technical projects worth around $3.8 billion.
Looking ahead, Trkiye intends to continue leveraging trade diplomacy through delegations and third-country partnerships with countries like the UK and Japan. The aim is to support local firms in traditional hubs such as Libya and Iraq, as well as in European markets like Portugal and Romania, and future reconstruction plans in Ukraine and Syria.
