Ankara: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday emphasized Trkiye's commitment to continue cooperating with Germany on regional issues, including Syria, Gaza, and the war in Ukraine. Erdogan made these remarks during a joint news conference with visiting German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Ankara.
According to Anadolu Agency, Erdogan expressed the collective desire for lasting peace and prosperity in Syria following a change in administration after the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime in December. He conveyed confidence in Germany's support for Trkiye's efforts in Syria's reconstruction. Erdogan also reiterated Trkiye's long-standing advocacy for a "just peace" to end the conflict in Ukraine, which was a topic of discussion during their meetings.
Erdogan highlighted the importance of maintaining the Gaza ceasefire established on January 19, emphasizing the international community's responsibility to pursue a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He also noted concerns about rising xenophobia, racism, and Islamophobia in Europe, which affect the Turkish community.
Steinmeier acknowledged the shared interest of Germany and Trkiye in establishing lasting regional peace and recognized Ankara's significant role in this process. He criticized US President Donald Trump's proposals to expel Palestinians from Gaza to other countries as concerning and unacceptable under international law. Steinmeier underlined the initial consensus between Germany and Trkiye on the Gaza ceasefire as a step towards a broader political process involving all stakeholders.
Erdogan pointed to the recent high-level engagements as evidence of the close dialogue between Trkiye and Germany. He emphasized the robust political, economic, humanitarian, and cultural ties that offer opportunities for further development. He highlighted the strong economic and commercial relations and the growing trade volume and mutual investments between the two nations.
The Turkish president also addressed issues such as terrorism, irregular migration, visas, the defense industry, and the Turkish community in Germany. He extended his best wishes for the upcoming snap elections in Germany on February 23. Erdogan noted discussions on Trkiye-EU relations, particularly emphasizing the steps needed for the Customs Union and visa liberalization.
Steinmeier underscored the importance of an inclusive process in Syria and coordination with international actors for stability, advocating for the participation of all ethnic groups as a basis for the return of displaced Syrians.
Addressing the aftermath of the February 6, 2023 earthquakes in Trkiye, Steinmeier expressed solidarity and announced a loan of 140 million euros to support reconstruction efforts, including building earthquake-resistant schools in affected areas.
