Qatar Welcomes Trkiye-Brokered Pact to Resolve Somalia-Ethiopia Tensions

DOHA: Qatar has expressed its approval of a new agreement mediated by Trkiye, aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict between Somalia and Ethiopia. The accord, announced following a meeting in Ankara, marks a significant development in efforts to ease tensions between the two East African nations. According to Anadolu Agency, Qatar's Foreign Ministry released a statement highlighting the importance of the pact, which is seen as a preliminary step towards comprehensive technical negotiations. The ministry expressed optimism that Somalia and Ethiopia will engage in discussions that could lead to a lasting resolution, benefiting the aspirations of both nations for stability and prosperity, while also enhancing peace and security in the Horn of Africa. Qatar acknowledged Trkiye's pivotal role in facilitating the consensus, attributing the successful mediation to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. President Erdogan hosted Somalian President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in An kara, where the leaders collectively announced the Ankara Declaration. Erdogan emphasized the commitment to fostering peace and cooperation between Somalia and Ethiopia. The declaration reaffirms the two countries' dedication to respecting each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity, aligning with international law and principles outlined by the United Nations and the African Union. Historical tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia intensified after Ethiopia's agreement with Somaliland to utilize the Red Sea port of Berbera. Trkiye's intervention was aimed at defusing these tensions and promoting dialogue between the parties involved.
