Ankara: US tech giants OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank are collaborating to establish a venture aimed at investing up to $500 billion in artificial intelligence infrastructure within the US, as announced by OpenAI on Wednesday.
According to Anadolu Agency, OpenAI revealed on X that an initial investment of $100 billion will be launched immediately for the project, named Stargate. The company emphasized that this infrastructure will bolster American leadership in AI, create hundreds of thousands of jobs, and provide significant economic benefits globally.
OpenAI highlighted that the project will not only support the re-industrialization of the United States but also offer strategic capabilities to safeguard the national security of America and its allies. The announcement came after US President Donald Trump endorsed the project on Tuesday, marking the first full day of his return to the White House.
During a White House announcement, Trump stated, "These world-leading technology giants are forming Stargate, a new American company that will create over 100,000 American jobs," while being accompanied by SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
Since Trump's election last November, there has been an increase in cooperation between his administration and tech firms. Trump aims to demonstrate that his administration is more business-friendly compared to Joe Biden's recently concluded presidency.
MGX, SoftBank, and OpenAI will lead Stargate, with SoftBank assuming financial responsibility and OpenAI taking on operational responsibility. Masayoshi Son will serve as the chairman, as stated in the announcement.
The initial technology partners for the project include Arm, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Oracle, and OpenAI. The construction of the infrastructure has already begun in Texas, with evaluations underway for potential sites across the country for additional campuses as definitive agreements are finalized.
To develop and operate the AI system, Oracle, NVIDIA, and OpenAI will collaborate, building upon OpenAI's longstanding partnership with NVIDIA since 2016 and its recent collaboration with Oracle, as mentioned in the statement.
OpenAI expressed anticipation for the continued development of AI, particularly artificial general intelligence (AGI), for the benefit of humanity. The company believes this new step is crucial for enabling creative individuals to harness AI to enhance humanity.
However, billionaire businessman Elon Musk, a key ally of Trump, expressed skepticism about the venture, stating, "They don't actually have the money. SoftBank has well under $10B secured. I have that on good authority."
