Sydney: Heavy rains and flash floods on Monday hit parts of Australia with the onset of the monsoon season. Sydney, the capital of New South Wales (NSW), experienced significant rainfall leading to flash floods, as reported by national broadcaster ABC.

According to Anadolu Agency, about 80 millimeters (three inches) of rainfall accumulated in just one hour, causing several vehicles to become stuck in floodwaters. Authorities conducted between 21 to 23 flood rescues, while the NSW State Emergency Service, under superintendent Stuart Fisher, received over 550 calls for assistance. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but residents were cautioned to remain indoors due to the severe weather conditions. Weather forecasts predict further storms in the region.

In Victoria state, southeastern Australia, a flash flooding warning was also issued on Monday. Some areas recorded over 100 millimeters (3.9 inches) of rainfall throughout the day, which led to more than 120 requests for assistance in the region.

North Queensland, still recovering from previous floods, is bracing for additional rainfall as the monsoon season continues. An 82-year-old woman was confirmed as the second fatality in the recent flood disaster last Tuesday, and several residents remain stranded in their homes after 10 days.
