Washington: Some imports from China are now subject to a maximum tariff rate of up to 245%, a White House official confirmed. This significant increase in tariffs is part of ongoing efforts by the United States to address what it perceives as unfair trade practices by China.

According to Anadolu Agency, a fact sheet posted on the White House website highlighted that the current maximum tariff on Chinese imports has soared to 245%, significantly surpassing the previously reported upper threshold of 145%. This figure is composed of a 125% reciprocal tariff recently imposed by President Donald Trump, along with an additional 20% tariff related to fentanyl.

The White House official elaborated that certain goods are subjected to additional Section 301 tariffs, which range from approximately 7.5% to 100%. These tariffs aim to penalize unfair trade practices, leading to a cumulative US tariff of 245% for some Chinese products.

Specifically, electric vehicles and syringes are impacted by Section 301 tariffs at a rate of 100%, resulting in a total tariff of around 245% when considering the fentanyl tariffs and reciprocal tariffs, from which these products are not exempt.

President Trump expressed his stance on the matter, emphasizing that the onus is on China to initiate trade negotiations. He indicated that China, rather than the US, should make the first move towards resolving the escalating tariff conflict between the world's two largest economies.

Trump also disclosed that a Japanese delegation was en route to the White House for discussions on tariffs, military support, and trade fairness. He expressed optimism about reaching an agreement that would benefit both Japan and the United States.
