Beijing: French President Emmanuel Macron commenced a three-day visit to China, accompanied by business leaders and government officials, marking his fourth state trip to the country. Macron is expected to hold discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang, and top lawmaker Zhao Leji, with plans to later visit Chengdu.

According to Anadolu Agency, the visit is seen as symbolically important, suggesting that Europe seeks to maintain dialogue with China while avoiding being fully absorbed into Washington's containment strategy. The trip comes against the backdrop of rising trade volumes between China and France, which reached approximately $80 billion, and broader EU-China trade relations valued at around $785.8 billion last year.

Political analysts, including Einar Tangen from the Beijing-based Taihe Institute, have remarked on the significance of Macron's visit. Tangen noted that while the trip underscores Europe's intent to engage, the EU's demands for China to cut supplies to Russia amid the Ukraine conflict are viewed as unrealistic. Beijing maintains a neutral stance on the war, refusing to succumb to Western pressures while continuing its core ties with Moscow.

Macron's visit follows his earlier tour of Southeast Asia, where he advocated for a 'third way' approach to help nations steer clear of the US-China rivalry. Einar Tangen highlighted that Europe's strategic autonomy appears shallow, as its economic and security dependencies on the US make Macron's visit more of a diplomatic gesture than a strategic shift.

The analyst further commented that Beijing anticipates Macron leaving with "warm words" and "vague commitments" to dialogue, along with potential trade announcements. China views the engagement as positive but half-hearted, as Europe remains closely aligned with US policies on Ukraine and supply chains. Nonetheless, China will continue to monitor the situation, hoping for a genuine change in Europe's attitude and sincerity.
