China: China on Thursday called for an end to the 'remnants of colonialism,' and expressed support to uphold 'international fairness and justice.' Beijing's envoy to the UN, Fu Cong, made the remarks while addressing a UN General Assembly meeting to commemorate the first International Day Against Colonialism in all its forms and manifestations.

According to Anadolu Agency, Fu stated that "China aligns itself with the statement by Venezuela on behalf of the Group of Friends in defense of the charter of the United Nations." Despite the end of colonial occupation, Fu highlighted that hegemony, unilateralism, and power politics continue to persist as legacies of colonialism. He urged the international community to resist colonial mentalities in various domains and promote democracy and rule of law in international relations.

Fu's comments were made in the context of China's support for Venezuela's request for an emergency Security Council meeting amid rising tensions with the US. The US military has been active in the Caribbean, targeting vessels for alleged drug trafficking without publicly disclosed evidence. Recent tensions escalated when US forces seized a sanctioned oil tanker off Venezuela, an act Caracas denounced as 'international piracy.'

Additionally, Fu referenced the era of Japanese colonialism, insisting that historical aggression must not be denied or distorted. He emphasized that Japan, as a World War II defeated nation, must reflect on its historical actions and adhere to its commitments, especially on the Taiwan issue. Tensions between China and Japan have been rising since Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's comments on Taiwan, which China sharply criticized, leading to diplomatic and economic repercussions.
