Brussels: The EU passenger car market experienced growth in November, showing a 2.1% increase compared to the same period last year, with 887,491 new automobile registrations. This data was disclosed by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association on Tuesday.
According to Anadolu Agency, the overall car sales in Europe, which includes the EU, the European Free Trade Association, and the UK, also saw a rise of 2.4% year-on-year, reaching 1.08 million units during the same timeframe. Among the major car markets within the EU, Spain recorded the highest growth with a 12.9% increase, followed by the Netherlands at 3.3% and Germany at 2.5%.
Electric vehicles played a significant role in driving market growth, with battery-electric vehicle (BEV) sales soaring by 44.1% year-on-year in November. The total number of BEVs sold reached 188,730 units, representing 21.3% of all new car sales. Italy saw a remarkable 132.5% increase in BEV sales, while Spain and Germany recorded growth rates of 60.9% and 58.5%, respectively.
Hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs) also maintained a strong presence, comprising 34% of the EU market in November. HEV registrations increased by 4.2% to 301,819 units. Meanwhile, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles exhibited robust growth, with sales rising by 38.4% to 91,699 units.
Conversely, traditional internal combustion engine vehicles faced significant declines. Petrol car registrations dropped by 21.9%, and their market share diminished to 23.3%. Diesel car registrations also decreased by 23.2%, reducing their market share to 7.9% in November, with most EU markets experiencing double-digit declines.
