Cuba Challenges US Trade Restrictions

Ankara:Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez has criticized the United States, stating that it lacks the authority to dictate which countries or companies can engage in trade, invest, or sell fuel to Cuba. Rodriguez argues that Washington's measures not only target Cuba but also affect the broader international community.

According to Anadolu Agency, Rodriguez expressed these views on the social media platform X, where he emphasized that the US does not hold the 'practical and moral authority' to define what is permissible under international law and free trade rules. He accused compliant countries and companies of being 'accomplices' in what he termed the 'collective punishment' of the Cuban people.

Rodriguez further accused the US of attempting to enforce a naval blockade and an 'energy siege' against Cuba. He asserted that the US has no right to intercept or inspect vessels in international waters or take military actions based on its suspicions of ship activities.

He also charged the US with trying to 'usurp' sovereign resources and territories of other countries, though he did not provide specific examples. Cuba has consistently criticized US sanctions, which it refers to as a blockade, arguing that they adversely affect the Cuban economy and its population.

The US has enforced significant economic restrictions on Cuba for decades, with recent measures targeting Cuban state entities and other economic sectors. This ongoing conflict arises as Cuba struggles with shortages of fuel and essential goods, and Havana focuses its critique on measures it claims limit its ability to secure energy supplies internationally. Rodriguez concluded by asserting Cuba's protection under international law and dismissing the legitimacy of US actions.
