Rome: In a symbolic gesture calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, Rome dimmed the lights of the iconic Trevi Fountain for one hour on Friday night. This action follows a city council resolution passed last month, titled 'Rome will not remain silent,' highlighting the city's stance on the ongoing conflict.

According to Anadolu Agency, the front facade of the historic Palazzo Poli, situated behind the fountain, displayed the message 'Let's stop the war in Gaza.' This projection served as a symbolic demand for a ceasefire. Alongside this, a group of pro-Palestinian demonstrators assembled at the fountain, waving Palestinian flags and protesting what they described as genocide by Israel in Gaza.

The demonstrators emphasized the severity of the situation in Gaza. While the projected message referenced 'war,' protestors held signs asserting that the events in Gaza amounted to genocide rather than war. Some slogans chanted by the group accused Israel of committing atrocities against Palestinians, drawing a controversial comparison to the actions of Nazi Germany against Jews during World War II.

The demonstrators also voiced criticism towards the US and the EU for their perceived complicity through silence. Chants of 'Free Palestine,' 'Stop the genocide,' and 'From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free' echoed through the gathering, drawing the attention of tourists, some of whom expressed solidarity with the pro-Palestinian group.
